The Volvo XC90 is a popular mid sized luxury crossover SUV and is based on the Volvo P2 platform. This same platform is shared with the
Volvo S80 as well as the
Volvo V70 which was a major inspiration of the XC90. The Volvo XC90 is actually the to selling vehicle in the United States and accounts for about 25% of the total sales in the United States.
In 2005 a Volvo V8 engine was added to the Volvo XC90. The engine is a 4.4 litre Yamaha V8 engine and produces a massive 311 horsepower. The updated engine and its added power made the Volvo XC90 even more attractive to the demanding consumer that wants a powerful crossover SUV. At a starting price of just over $45,000 in USD Volvo expects to sell at least 15,000 per year. The price may seem steep to some when you consider it's likeness to several cars, but as a crossover SUV it's very reasonably priced when one considers the safety reputation of Volvo vehicles. The XC90 actually won the North American Truck of the Year award as well as Motor Trend Magazine's Sport/Utility Vehicle of the Year Award in 2003.
The XC90 will continue to be produced for the forseeable future and Volvo plans to update the vehicle for the 2007 model.
