The Swedish car manufacturer Volvo released its 850 series in most parts of the world in 1992, but it didn't hit the streets of the United States until 1994. The Volvo 850 was sold in the sedan and wagon model, as were most vehicles by Volvo during this time. The 850 was a big deal for Volvo and Volvo consumers because it was the first model in the United States that featured front wheel drive and an all aluminum 20 valve five cylinder engine.
The Volvo was loaded with all the goods with dual front airbags, antilock brakes, head restraints, power windows, power door locks and mirrors, three point seat belts in all passenger seating, cruise control, as well as the very cool dual zone climate control. Side torso airbags were added to the model as an option beginning in 1995. During the run of the 850 other great features such as optional leather interior, a powered moon roof, power seats, heated seats, keyless entry, automatic climate control, as well as automatic transmission became available.
The Volvo 850 was updated and renamed the Volvo S70 in 1998 and were sold through 2000 when they were finally replaced by the 2001 Volvo S60 and Volvo V70. The Volvo 850 was long considered one of Volvo's best engineering achievements.
